Abstract
The absorption spectra of solid films of six photoconductive dyes are reported. The transitions in the solid state correspond to those of the ``isolated'' cations in solution. However, the longest‐wavelength singlet‐singlet absorption band is split into components separated by 1000 cm—1 or more. Other bands are unaffected, except for a general decrease of oscillator strength. The results are interpreted in terms of light absorption by a single molecule, followed by exciton motion in the lowest excited state. Keywords
