Abstract
The importance of stem density and canopy coverage in the shrub layer to male ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) selecting display sites in a mixed-wood forest was evaluated by modifying the shrub layer around a series of drumming sites. Subsequent use of manipulated sites was compared with that of unmanipulated sites. Removal of the shrub layer within an area of 50 m2 centered on the drumming stage rendered most stages unacceptable to ruffed grouse subsequently selecting a display site. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
