Abstract
The loss in properties of fluorocarbon elastomers observed after aging of the polymer in engine oil is the result of interactions of some of the oil additives with elastomer. The degradation in mechanical properties of the elastomer is not due to any extensive dehydrofluorination reaction, but instead it is the result of increased crosslinking and hardening of the surface caused by these additives. Keywords
