TOTAL SODIUM, POTASSIUM AND CHLORIDE IN ADULT MAN 1

Abstract
Two adult male carcasses were analyzed for total content of water, fat, Na, K, and Cl. An average of the 2 analyses indicates that on a per kg basis the body contains 530 ml water, 62 meq Na, 52 meq K, 38 meq Cl, and 226 fat. On a fat-free basis, these values are 690 ml water, 80 meq Na, 67 meq K, and 45 meq Cl/kg. Analyses of skeletal tissues for Na were made with a new method which removes interfering substances completely and results in complete recoveries. (Proc. Soc. Exp. Biol. and Med. 90: 178). The method consists of passing a solution of bone ash through a cation exchange column, whereupon Na appears in the eluate free from P, K, Mg, and Ca.
