Abstract
Faraday effect and absorption at λ≈0.6-1.6 µm, and Kerr effect and reflecstivity at λ≈0.4-1.0 µm are measured at room temperature on single crystals grown by the flux method. A heat treatment of the AFe12O19 (A=Ba, Sr, Pb) crystals in oxygen brings about improvement in transparency but no discernible change in Faraday rotation. Partial substitution of Fe with Al in SrFe12O19 causes marked decrease in the Faraday rotation, which surpasses improvement in the transparency, lowering the magneto-optical figure of merit. The reflectivity (5–25%) and the Kerr rotation (12O19 and SrFe12O19 are 1.2–1.6 deg/dB at λ≈0.8-1.6 µm, which exceed that for YIG at 0.85<λ<1.0 µm.Keywords
