Abstract
An attempt is made to provide a rational method of constructing one degree of freedom approximations for impulsively loaded metal structures which are analysed according to an elementary rigid-plastic theory. The approximation follows automatically from a chosen mode shape, and a criterion for determining good mode shapes is introduced. Keywords
