Abstract
This chapter focuses on the construction of colonial categories and national identities, and those people who threatened these imperial divides. It examines the cultural politics of exclusion in colonial Southeast Asia beginning with the story about métissage and the sorts of progeny to which it gave rise in French Indochina at the turn of the century. The chapter analyzes the relationship among the discourses of inclusion, humanitarianism, and equality that informed liberal policy, and discusses discriminatory practices which were coexistent with, and reactive to, liberalism. Keywords
