EFFECTS OF CIGARETTE SMOKING UPON SPIROMETRIC PERFORMANCE OF COMMUNITY DWELLING MEN

Abstract
Spirometry was performed in a group of 410 healthy, community dwelling male volunteers. The observed values for nonsmokers were higher than those found in a similar study of institutionalized subjects in which smoking habits were not considered. These differences were ascribed to probable differences in cigarette consumption and physical condition. Evidence was presented which indicated that there was a consumption-related impairment of ventilatory function among cigarette smokers. Within the limitations of a retrospective, cross-sectional survey, the findings were consistent with reversibility of this impairment upon cessation of smoking.
