Abstract
Spores of B. megaterium contain proteolytic enzymes, the activity of these enzymes being accelerated by Mn. The enzymatic activity was demonstrated by paper partition chromatography, viscosimetry, and colorimetry with ninhydrin. The spore homogenate serves as a substrate for the enzyme, and is much more readily available for hydrolysis than are heterologous substrates such as gelatin and egg albumin. As the hydrolysis of the spore protein progresses, extracts derived from the homogenates become increasingly stimulatory to spore germination.
