The Geometry of Ordered Split-Film Networks

Abstract
An idealized geometrical analysis of ordered split-film networks produced by mechanical cutting is presented. Expres sions descrihing hranch length and width and stem widths in the expanded film structure are derived as functions of the processing variahles and cutting drum specifications. The fractional distrihution of area of the split film between stems and branches and average branch and stem denier are determined. Conditions necessary for producing an extendible sheet structure are specified in detail. An illustrative design is offered for a tyrical split-film application.
