Survivorship of Reported Cancer Cases in Northern New York State

Abstract
Survivorship through the 5th year after onset of symptoms was determined for 2065 cancer cases reported from 6 counties in northern New York with the first symptom in 1940-1942. The total study group had a 27.7% 5-year survival rate. Skin and lip cancer cases had the highest survivorship, followed by the major sexual sites, the major non-sexual internal sites, and leukemia. In many sites, especially cervix and ovary, the younger cases had the higher survivorship, even after adjustment for survivorship in the general population of the same age. Cases diagnosed in the early local stage had a consistently higher survivorship than other cases for the same sites.
