Varices in the Distal Duodenum Seen with a Fiber-Duodenoscope

Abstract
A rare case of varices in the third portion of the duodenum as seen with an Olympus JF-B duodenoscope is described. The unusual location of the varices was due to calcifying pylephlebitis secondary to schistosomiasis. Fiberduodenoscopy proved of value in the diagnosis when carried out in combination with roentgenographic studies. Biopsy from such lesions is contraindicated, however. Das duodenoskopische Bild von Varizen in der Pars horicontalis duodeni wird vorgestellt. Die ungewöhnliche Lokalisation der Varizen ging auf eine kalzifizierende Pylephlebitis im Gefolge einer Schistosomiasis zurück. Eine Biopsie einer derartigen, primär im Röntgenbild als Tumor imponierenden Läsion ist kontraindiziert.
