Abstract
Deformations of the nucleus are examined with a model based on the irrotational incompressible motion of an inhomogeneous fluid. Restrictions of previous treatments to small deformations are noted and the model is extended to arbitrary deformations. '".'he particular case of ellipsoidal deformation is considered and compared with experiment. It is concluded that the contribution of ellipsoidal deformation to hexadecapole deformation is not negligible.
