Psychrophiles in Milk Held Two Days in Farm Bulk Cooling Tanks

Abstract
Predominant psychrophilic bacteria from 174 samples of every-other-day, Grade A milk from farm bulk milk cooling tanks fell into the genera Aerobacter, Alcaligenes, Arthrobacter, Flavobacterium, Micrococcus, and Pseudomonas. Species of these genera are listed. None of the species grew appreciably in raw milk at 38[degree]C, although most grew in pasteurized milk. During barn feeding and holding of the cows, Arthrobacter species usually were predominant in every-other-day milks, with Pseudomonas 2d in frequency and Micrococcus 3d. While the cows were on pasture, Flavobacterium bacteria were most often predominant, followed by Arthrobacter, and Alcaligenes. Psychrophiles increased about 7-fold when cows went from barn housing to pasture feeding.
