THE ALCOHOLS PRESENT IN THE WAX OF AMERICAN COTTON

Abstract
A more complete examination of the alcohols present in the wax of American cotton has been made and the anomalous behaviour of gossypyl alcohol, tentatively ascribed to its occurrence in three forms and to its persistent retention of traces of water,2 is explained. The supposed anomalies are due to the presence of small quantities of higher alcohols and glycols. Cotton wax alcohols consist mainly of gossypyl alcohol, C30H62O, and montanyl alcohol, C28H58O, with small quantities of alcohols, C32H66O and C34H70O, and glycols, C30H62O2 and C28H58O2.
