Intermittency in area-preserving mappings

Abstract

The intermittent behavior of area-preserving maps of the plane just before the appearance of cycles is investigated. Analysis of a differential-equation version of a prototypical map predicts two new scaling laws. Numerical experiments confirm these predictions in the case of three cycles.
