Duplicated Rhythmic Patterns Between Deaf and Normal Hearing Children

Abstract
In a test of the hypothesis that there would be no significant differences in the comparison of error scores in duplicated patterns, 15 deaf, and 15 normal hearing children were presented 20 stimuli patterns. Error scores, computed deviations from correct responses, were calculated on two measures: the accuracy of the number of beats, and the accuracy of the actual rhythm. Three one variable analyses of variance were performed, with results indicating that significant differences were found in the beat error scores of deaf and normal hearing Ss. No significant differences were found in rhythm error scores. Results also indicated a significant difference in combined beat error, rhythm error scores between the Ss. A Multivariate Discriminant Analysis was performed to determine which patterns contributed the greatest variance to the reported results. Spearman's coefficient of rank correlation was calculated to test the relationship between the beat and rhythm error score variables between the Ss. The implications of the findings are discussed.Keywords
