Abstract
A test chart in which each row contains an equal number of E‐letters has been used for testing the so‐called line acuity in amblyopia patients under pleoptic treatment. The distances between symbols and the spaces between rows change in relation to letter size, and the positions of the E‐letters can be varied so as to make memorising of the chart impossible. The visual acuity of 84 amblyopia patients under pleoptic treatment has been tested with this chart, with the ordinary Snellen‐type test chart, and with single E‐letters before and after therapy. The study shows that the deeper the amblyopia, the greater are the differences in the results obtained with the three charts. Single E acuity can be as much as five times better than line acuity. The differences in results yielded by Snellen chart and by the “line chart” are significant in the case of deep amblyopia. Separation difficulty increases at the beginning of treatment. This chart appears to be well suited to daily testing of line acuity during pleoptic treatment. The importance of the separation difficulty in the vision screening studies for amblyopia has been stressed.—Keywords
