Identification of Ferritin within Gaucher Cells

Abstract
In 3 adults with Gaucher''s disease, 2 of them having no anemia, ferritin has been identified within many of the characteristic cells. Its accumulation is not a basic defect because of its absence in some otherwise typical cells. The increased cellular ferritin may derive from chronic ingestion of erythrocytes or of plasma or interstitial fluid Fe. Both intracellular and extracellular Fe may accumulate when increased hemolysis or long duration of the disease exist; the liberated Fe being deposited in the tissues in the storage forms of ferritin and hemosiderin.
