Abstract
A nonlinear hysteretic soil model and an energy transmitting boundary are utilized in the method. The model allows a failure criterion to be incorporated and accounts for stiffness degradation under repeated loading. The energy transmitting boundary provides the means for representation of typical marine soil profiles without the need for specifying rigid bedrock at a finite depth. Results showing acceleration and displacement time histories and response spectra for several different marine soil profiles and different levels of shaking are presented. Cases where the shear modulus increases linearly with depth as well as crust type shear strength profiles are studied. The analyses show that correct representation of soil properties both above and below the point of ground motion input is a major factor in controlling the nature of seismic response.Keywords
