Chemical Documentation of Allopatric Introgression in Juniperus

Abstract
Allopatric introgression is a potent source of variation and evolution in nature. Reliable documentation of this phenomenon in plants was not forthcoming. Chemical data was examined from volatile extracts of leaf foliage obtained from J. virginiana and J. scopulorum populations extending along a transect from near St. Louis, Missouri [USA] to the vicinity of Missoula, Montana. Detailed analyses of these populational samples strongly suggest that the variation found in J. virginiana across the Missouri River Basin is due to allopatric introgression from its more western cohort, J. scopulorum.
