It has been reported that an alkaline extract of beef pituitary glands contained an adrenotropic factor which was potent in influencing adrenal weight but relatively poor in causing adrenal ascorbic acid depletion. We have prepared and tested such an extract and believe that our preparation contained at least two types of activity, each capable of maintaining adrenal weights in hypophyk sectomized rats. These two types of activity appeared to be identifiable with the activities of two recognized pituitary hormones: luteinizing hormone (LH) and growth hormone (GH). No dissociation of ACTH into an adrenal weight main- taining factor and an adrenal ascorbic acid depleting factor need be postulated to explain our results.
