Diamagnetism of conduction electrons in simple metals

Abstract
A systematic method yielding the propagator of an electron moving in a periodic potential and subject to a uniform constant magnetic field is presented. The propagator is given as a series in the Fourier transform of the deviation of the potential from its mean. This result is used to calculate the density of states and the free energy of the conduction electrons in the alkali metals, to second order in the magnetic field and an appropriate effective potential. The steady diamagnetic susceptibility obtained from this is in reasonable agreement with experiment.
