Abstract
Standardized echography (pioneered and developed by Dr. Karl Ossoinig) is a state-of-the-art method of diagnostic ophthalmic ultrasound. More than sixty (60) orbital and periorbital and eighty (80) intraocular conditions may be detected and differentiated with high reliability. Optimal results can be expected when specified instrumentation and techniques are used by a well trained examiner. Specific instrumentation to be used includes standardized A-scan (i.e. Kretztechnik 7200MA/Ophthascan S), contact B-scan and Doppler instrumentation. A systematic approach to intraocular and orbital examinations includes use of the specific basic examination and special examination techniques. Once a lesion is detected with the basic examination, a variety of acoustic criteria are determined with topographic, quantitative and kinetic examination techniques for lesion differentiation, localization and measurement. In the globe, standardized echography is useful in both opaque media, where fundus view is obscured or prevented, and in clear media as a supplement to the ophthalmoscopic examination. Standardized echography is also useful in the evaluation of orbital and periorbital disease. Mass-like lesions, extraocular muscle and optic nerve conditions may be detected, differentiated and accurately measured.Keywords
