Abstract
Results of a first application of the variable-screening model in scattering calculations for slow ion-atom collisions are presented. Adiabatic molecular orbitals generated from the model's effective one-electron Hamiltonian are employed in a coupled-state impact-parameter calculation of cross sections for K-shell excitation in Ne++O collisions. The reliability of these orbitals is assessed by comparing these results to similar results based on Hartree-Fock orbitals and orbitals corresponding to the Coulomb field of two effective nuclear charges. Keywords
