A simple method for purifying phytoferritin

Abstract
Phytoferritins can be purified from leaves by ultracentrifugation in the presence of SDS. They are recovered in high yield from cowpeas, moderate yield from beans and low and erratic yield from soybeans. Some plants contain no detectable phytoferritin (e.g. less than 0.1% the yield of cowpeas). Phytoferritin is conveniently detected by counterimmunoelectrophoresis followed by ferrocyanide staining. Phytoferritins have two protein subunits of 24 Kd and 23 Kd.
