Abstract
Hydrological observations and current measurements around northern New Zealand made in March 1970 and 1971 demonstrated a predominantly northwest going coastal current off the west coast north of Reef Point; this current is opposite in direction to the previously described West Auckland Current, which thus requires redescription. A prominent upwelling zone between the Three Kings Islands and Cape Reinga generally results from the flow around northern New Zealand striking the south‐western edge of the continental shelf, although some contribution from the north‐west is possible on occasions. Upwelling is enhanced by southerly winds which produce divergence in the currents. Weaker upwelling observed along the west coast of the Auckland Peninsula is probably wind‐induced and may be enhanced near Reef Point. Keywords
