Abstract
The output rates of a sub-band video coder are studied. The coder has been used to compress ten sequences of two minutes each. The resulting bit-rates are analyzed and the issues of statistical multiplexing, source modeling and resource allocation are discussed in light of the simulation results. A model is suggested in which a bit-rate sequence is approximated by the sum of a slowly varying non-stationary process and a stationary noise-like one. A dynamic resource allocation could thus be based on the slowly varying process while the noise-like process is used to set an error margin on the short-term variations. Keywords
