Abstract
The author reports the results of a preliminary study of potential exposure of 383 Utah National Guardsmen to Giardia infection at a field training campsite. A questionnaire response indicated that 15 per cent had symptoms suggestive of giardiasis. The importance of this finding as related to military exercises in geographic regions at high risk is discussed. The life cycle, form of transmission of the Giardia organism, and its usual symptomatology are briefly reviewed. Recommendations are made for limiting exposure during future encampments, together with preparations for more detailed studies of the disease and its military significance. Keywords
