Abstract
Isolated lemming adrenals display daily rhythms which persist for at least five days when the glands are maintained in organ culture. Rhythmic corticosteroid secretion in vitro shows a »free running« period of less than 24 hours (23.4 ± 0.2 hours). When the intervals of animal sacrifice in culture experiments overlap, initial peaks displayed by glands from the freshly killed donor animals are in phase with peaks of five-day cultures; these data are interpreted as evidence for »free running« periodicity in adrenal function of lemmings exposed to the arctic day. Keywords
