FURTHER OBSERVATIONS ON THE ADRENAL SECRETORY RHYTHM OF THE BROWN LEMMING

Abstract
Isolated lemming adrenals display daily rhythms which persist for at least five days when the glands are maintained in organ culture. Rhythmic corticosteroid secretion in vitro shows a »free running« period of less than 24 hours (23.4 ± 0.2 hours). When the intervals of animal sacrifice in culture experiments overlap, initial peaks displayed by glands from the freshly killed donor animals are in phase with peaks of five-day cultures; these data are interpreted as evidence for »free running« periodicity in adrenal function of lemmings exposed to the arctic day.
