Abstract
The relation that optic neuritis (ON) bears to multiple sclerosis (MS) remains controversial. Approximately 40 per cent of patients with MS manifest ON at some point during their illness, and epidemiologic studies have shown that ON and MS patients share features that distinguish them from a peer control group. For these reasons the notion that the two entities represent different manifestations of a single disease has gained wide support.There are problems with such an interpretation, however.
