Research Related to Family Factors in Autism

Abstract
Recent studies do not support the position that parents of autistic children have extreme personality characteristics, such as coldness, obsessiveness. and introversion. In terms of personality characteristics, these parents were similar to parents of other problem children. However, they were likely to be more affluent, and the fathers were more likely to be brighter and better educated. The continual stress of dealing with an autistic child may eventually result in personality changes for these parents. Recent studies support the idea of genetic inheritance which may not involve the complete syndrome of autism but may involve a language-cognitive component.
