Abstract
It is shown that the birds are still widespread in New South Wales, and in some places are reasonably common. In virgin mallee their density probably has not declined, although such areas are few. It is concluded that the fox is not the main cause of the decline of make fowl in uncleared areas. It is more probable that sheep, and perhaps rabbits, enter into direct competition with the birds for food.
