Computer studies of channeling of ions in alkali halide lattices

Abstract
The channeling of potassium, sodium, and chlorine ions in potassium chloride and sodium chloride has been investigated by computer simulation techniques. With the model chosen, axial and interplanar channeling occurs for potassium and chlorine ions in potassium chloride and for the smaller sodium ion in sodium chloride. Some events indicate the possibility of energetic sodium ions being displaced from their lattice sites into channels. The channeling process, especially at higher energies, is relatively insensitive to reasonable variations in the ionic interaction potential.
