COMMITTEE ON MATERNAL WELFAREMultiparous Uterine AtonyA normotensive 41-year-old gravida 5, para 4, weighing 93 kg, was first seen at 16 weeks and carefully followed. The hematocrit was 40 per cent, and weight gain was limited to 3.6 kg. Apprehensive, complaining of severe headache, and immediately after a large meal, the patient was admitted to the hospital at term with contractions three to six minutes apart, and the cervix 5 cm dilated. Medication was begun at once, and the membranes were artificially ruptured.About one hour later a saddle-block anesthetic was given, and a 3855-g infant was delivered normally . . .
