ELECTROLYTE COMPOSITION OF BONE AND THE PENETRATION OF RADIOSODIUM AND DEUTERIUM OXIDE INTO DOG AND HUMAN BONE 12

Abstract
Sixteen human and 12 dog bone samples were analyzed for water and electrolyte contents. Human bone was found to contain 12,490 mg. eq. of Ca 234 m. eq. of Na and 29 m. eq. of chloride per kg. of fat-free bone. The water cotent of human bone was found to vary from 134 to 522 g. per kg. of wet fat-free bone. In the dog mean values of 11,650 m. eq. of Ca, 229 m. eq. of Na, and 19 m. eq. of chloride per kg. of fat-free bone solids were obtained, with water contents varying from 184 to 319 g./kg. of wet, fat-free tissue. It was found that about 45% of bone Na is exchangeable with radiosodium and that 100% of bone water is exchangeable with D2O after 4 hrs.
