Contributions of Rosemary Ellis to Knowledge Development for Nursing

Abstract
The late Rosemary Ellis outlined a path for knowledge development for nursing that has the potential for increasing the knowledge base for practice. She viewed the mission of the discipline of nursing to be the development, transmission, and organization of a coherent body of knowledge. The development of such knowledge should begin with the identification of phenomena of concern and questions for study. Moreover, said Ellis, the utilization of knowledge should be deliberate and artful so as to produce the human beneficence for which nursing exists.
