To the Editor: ADSOL (adenine-glucose-mannitol-sodium chloride) preservation solution (AS-1), described by Dr. Valeri in the February 7 issue,1 was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1983 for preserving cells for 49 days from the day of collection. The approval was based on data obtained from the laboratories of two of us (R.A. and A.H.) with use of a "standardized" single isotope technique (51Cr) to measure the autologous red-cell survival2; a mean recovery rate of 76 per cent was noted in these studies.3 Our work was later confirmed by another laboratory (L.B.'s) using the alternative standardized . . .
