Abstract
Summary: Isoelectricfocusing (IEF) was used to characterise 29 spring and winter barley varieties obtained from standard seed stocks of the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB), UK using eight isozyme and protein marker systems. The eight protein and isozyme marker phenotypes for each variety are described and 27 of the 29 barley varieties examined are uniquely distinguished. Isozyme and protein banding patterns as resolved by IEF provide character traits useful for varietal description and identification. Advantages of the technique include improved resolution of banding patterns, increased standardisation between gels and the ease of handling a large number of samples rapidly and effectively. Keywords
