Who is Stereotyping Whom and Why?1

Abstract
Although many publications imply that a negative attitude toward older people is common in America, it is argued that evidence does not support this judgment. Part of the problem is due to terminological confusion. A study is reported in which participants are allowed to give their opinions on the number of exceptions to generalizations about the elderly. Possible motives for misinterpreting evidence are suggested.
