Parentification of the Child: A Case Study of Bowlby’s Compulsive Care-Giving Attachment Pattern

Abstract
Bowlby describes premature care-giving behaviors directed from a child to a parent as the antecedent of a compulsive care-giving pattern of relating in adulthood. A case example is presented to illustrate the psychological sequelae of role reversal in parent-child relationships. Psychotherapy organized around the completion of mourning enables the person to master the consequences of role reversal in childhood.
