Abstract
Cu is the only known chemical element that will induce setting of the larval oyster and is most effective under natural conditions in amounts varying from 0.15 mgm. to 0.50 mgm. per liter. Surface and underground waters dissolve Cu from the land and transport it to sea. Variations in Cu content of the water were found to be directly correlated with differences in the intensity of setting and the distribution of oysters. Cu likewise has a marked stimulative effect on the metamorphosis of the oyster and causes the initial release of pigmented leucocytes into the blood stream.
