Abstract
Diquaternary salts of trans-1,2-di-(4-pyridyl)ethylene are reduced in aqueous solution by a one-electron transfer to give highly coloured radical cations which are more reactive than those derived from herbicidal bipyridylium salts. The salts of trans-1,2-di-(4-pyridyl)ethylene are, for practical purposes, inactive as herbicides.
