Abstract
Dark respiration rates (R) of Italian ryegrass and barley were measured under field conditions. Root respiration rates of both ryegrass and barley were greatest 1 or 2 wk before heading. Respiration rate of the aerial parts of the crops was related to standing dry weight (W) and gross photosynthetic rate (P). This relationship can be expressed as R = 0.06P + 0.015W for ryegrass and R = 0.16P + 0.0033W for barley. The dark respiration rate integrated over the growing period was about half of the gross photosynthesis.
