A PORTABLE FREEZING CABINET FOR COLD-STRESSING PLANTS GROWING IN THE FIELD

Abstract
A freezing cabinet consisting of a modified domestic freezer mounted on a two-wheel transporter is described. It is placed over plants in the field to subject them to cold stresses. The unit produces linear cooling rates at 1–10 C/h and maintains constant or cyclical temperatures using a programmable controller. A temperature of −25 C was obtained at an ambient of 27 C. Lower temperatures are attainable when the ambient is lower. Air temperature inside the cabinet was spatially uniform within 1 C, followed a linear program within 2 C and was kept within 1.1 C when a constant temperature was selected.
