Abstract
A-deficient, ovariectomized rats having persistent, cornified vaginal cells, and ovariectomized control rat''s were injected with various strengths of a placental extract. The extract was standardized for the production of pregnancy-like mucoid cells of the vaginal epithelium. A count of mitotic figures in the vaginas of the A-deficient animals was comparable to those of the controls, showing that proliferation was possible. As a result of the injections the control animals all showed mucoid vaginal cells both in histological sections of the sacrificed animals and in smears of the living animals. None of the animals suffering from avitaminosis A showed any mucoid vaginal cells either in smears or in histological sections. In rats, avitaminosis A was responsible for the prevention of the characteristic action of a gonotropic hormone.
