Observational learning of discrimination problems by chimpanzees.

Abstract
A new method for studying imitation in primates is described and results on tests given. 3 different techniques were used on demonstration trials: (A) the imitator received food in a cup near the correct stimulus, (B) the imitator received food in a centrally located cup, (C) the imitator received no food. In B and C the imitator''s response seemed to be solely elicited through social facilitation. Perfect mastery varied in frequency with the technique: A, 5 out of 8; B, 2 out of 7; C, 1 out of 11.
