Insect Eggs Transported on the Outer Surface of Airplanes1

Abstract
Viable eggs of Laphygma frugiperda, L. exigua, Prodenia dolichos, and Prodenia ornithogalli (Lepidoptera) were recovered from the outer surfaces of 7.8% of 9055 planes arriving at Miami, Florida, from the Caribbean area and S. America during the period April 1-December 31, 1949. Larvae were reared to maturity on various foods, the most satisfactory being lettuce, Sapodilla fruit and fig leaves. It is conceivable that these lepidopterans or related spp., transported in a similar fashion, could become established and pose a serious threat in areas where they do not presently occur.
