Abstract
Summary: Evidence has been presented that Types 1, 4, 5 and 6 adenovirus possess similar growth characteristics. Intracellular CF antigen had an eclipse period of 18–20 hr and intracellular infectious virus was detected 16–22 hr after infection of HeLa cells. This suggests that the CF antigen and infectious virus are produced independently and the CF antigen was not a precursor to infectious virus. A delay in the release of the CF antigen and infectious virus was observed with the strains of the types of adenovirus studied. Furthermore, HeLa cells infected with Type 4 adenovirus were capable of continued antigen production despite early development of maximum cytopathogenic effects. Keywords
