Intracranial collateral circulation via leptomeningeal and rete mirabile anastomoses

Abstract
Rete mirabile filling can be identified angiographically in patients who have large areas of brain deprived of blood supply, if contrast injections are made selectively into the external carotid artery. Collateral circulatory connections between leptomeningeal arteries can be demonstrated consistently by selective internal carotid artery injections and rapid serial filming. Further experience with the identification and dynamic change of such anastomoses should increase accuracy of predicting prognosis and should help direct prophylactic therapeutic efforts.
